This guide walks through the full installation and commissioning process of the JL-205C, from what you should do before unboxing to all the ways to test that you installed it properly.

Step 1: How Do You Prepare For Installation?

The installer has to ensure that the products and installation tools required are available before commencing the installation.

Don’t start touching anything until you know what you’re working with. Pull the unit out and check the model number printed on the housing. It should read JL-205C. The accuracy of a photocell depends largely on where it is mounted. The JL-205C senses ambient light through its sensor window. Where that window points determines what it reads.

Requirements for a good installation location:

  • The sensor faces the open sky unobstructed
  • Avoid positions where tall structures can cast shadows across the sensor during the day
  • Distance the unit from things that could cause strong electromagnetic interference such as high-voltage transformers, large motors, or industrial equipment.

The top of the JL-205C includes an arrow pointing this toward the north. Facing the sensor north ensures that it receives a consistent, natural supply of ambient daylight without direct sun exposure. However in the Southern Hemisphere, you should face it south instead.

Step 4: How Do You Mount the JL-205C Securely?

The JL-205C uses ANSI C136.10 twist-lock mounting. In practice, that means it plugs straight into the standard 3-pin NEMA receptacle you’ll find on most street lights and area lighting fixtures, i.e. no adapters, no extra hardware.

Do this to ensure firm mounting:

  1. Align the three brass pins under the JL-205C with the holes on the receptacle
  2. Push the unit downward firmly into the receptacle
  3. Rotate clockwise until the terminals lock into position
  4. Confirm the arrow on the top is pointing north
  5. If the receptacle position doesn’t allow for north orientation, rotate the receptacle base before locking

The ANSI C136.10 interface is designed for hand-pressure engagement only, so do not overtighten or force the lock.

The JL-205C uses a standard 3-wire configuration:

  • Black wire → Line input (live/hot from power supply)
  • White wire → Neutral

Step 6: What Should You Check When You Power On?

The first power-on is a diagnostic moment. Observe the photocell’s initial behaviour carefully before assuming installation is complete.

What to observe at power-on:

  • During daytime commissioning, the load should stay off
  • At night, give it up to 20 seconds and the load should energise on its own
  • Any buzzing, flickering, or lights cycling on and off repeatedly is a sign the sensor is catching the fixture’s own output

Step 7: How Do You Verify the Photocell Is Functioning Correctly?

Functional verification confirms the JL-205C is switching at the right light levels and responding accurately to real dusk and dawn conditions.

Daytime test:

  • Cover the sensor window with your hand or a dark cloth for 20–30 seconds
  • The load should switch on within the delay period (3–20 seconds)
  • The load should switch off within the same delay window when you remove the over
  • This confirms the sensing circuit is working without waiting for actual nightfall

Nightfall verification:

  • At dusk, the fixture should switch on automatically as ambient light drops below the on-threshold (approximately 6 لوكس)

If the photocell does not respond as expected:

  • Recheck sensor orientation
